Countries At Risk
Although meningitis is a worldwide risk there are a few countries across Africa that have a much higher risk known as the ‘meningitis belt’.
Neisseria meningitidis bacteria can cause life-threatening meningitis, which can result in brain inflammation and potentially severe complications or mortality within hours. The ASCWY vaccine for meningitis protects against four main types of this bacteria: A, C, W, and Y.
The “African meningitis belt”, which stretches from Senegal in the west to Ethiopia in the east, is where meningococcal disease is most likely to spread. In this region, there are several nations that experience significant epidemics, particularly during the dry season, including Niger, Nigeria, Chad, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Sudan.
The World Health Organisation has endorsed an initiative to eliminate meningitis globally by 2030. The plan involves increasing vaccine accessibility, enhancing outbreak response measures, and monitoring areas with higher risks of disease transmission.

Travel Precautions
Meningococcal disease is transmitted through respiratory droplets, and the risk is higher in overcrowded environments. Wearing a face mask and practicing good hand hygiene can help reduce the risk of infection.
Signs & Symptoms
Meningococcal meningitis typically presents with a sudden onset of fever, headache, nausea, and vomiting, which can develop within minutes to hours of infection. Neck stiffness is also a common symptom of meningitis.
The Vaccination
Travelers to high-risk areas are advised to get the meningitis vaccine. It is a requirement for those planning to visit Saudi Arabia for the Hajj or Umrah pilgrimage, and entry to the country will not be allowed without the appropriate vaccination certificate. The vaccine provides protection for up to 5 years. Additionally, the meningitis vaccine is now required for students attending school or university.
