Countries At Risk
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most widespread sexually transmitted infections in the world, with the highest impact found in low- and middle-income countries, where access to cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination programmes are limited.
The highest rates of HPV-related diseases are found in sub-Saharan Africa, parts of Southeast Asia, and Latin America. In these regions, cervical cancer remains a significant cause of cancer-related deaths amongst women, despite the availability of HPV vaccination and early detection methods. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that around 90% of cervical cancer deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.
These high rates of infection and death are mainly due to lack of national HPV vaccination programs, low public knowledge, cultural stigmas around sexual health, and poor healthcare infrastructure. For example, where the HPV vaccination is not yet part of the regular immunisation schedule in many African countries, or coverage is low due to financial and logistical constraints.
