Countries At Risk

Hepatitis A occurs worldwide however the majority of cases occurs in developing countries with poor sanitation and hygiene commonly in Africa, Asia, South and Central America.

The hepatitis A virus (HAV) is what causes hepatitis A, a very contagious liver condition that is mostly spread by touching someone who has it or drinking or eating something that is contaminated. Although it is present on a global scale, the likelihood of contracting hepatitis A is significantly higher in regions with inadequate public health infrastructure, limited access to clean water, and poor sanitation. High-risk areas for hepatitis A include countries in various regions of Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Central and South America, and Eastern Europe. Travellers to these regions are strongly advised to get a hepatitis A vaccination prior to their departure and to keep to strict food and water precautions during their visit. While residents of high-risk countries may develop immunity at a young age, visitors can still be particularly susceptible. In regions where hepatitis A is prevalent, the most effective strategies to reduce the risk of infection and protect public health are preventative measures, vaccination, and awareness.
