Countries At Risk
Chikugunya is now reported in Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas. The virus is transmitted by mosquitoes and poses a risk to travellers visiting tropical and subtropical regions, especially in locations where mosquito control measures have not been implemented or are inadequate.
South Asia and Southeast Asia are considered a high-risk destination for travellers due to the frequency and severity of cases in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and the Philippines. Chikungunya is common in some African countries, such as Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Nigeria. Additionally, cases have been reported in the Caribbean, mostly in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico. People visiting Central and South America‘s Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, Colombia, Venezuela, and Peru should also be cautious as this virus is often linked to other mosquito-borne diseases like Zika and dengue.
People who get chikungunya often experience fevers, rashes, and joint pain that can last for weeks. Travellers who are considered more at risk to illness may now be given a shot called IXCHIQ.
