Countries At Risk

Yellow fever occurs in parts of Africa and South America. In many of these countries you will be asked to provide proof of a yellow fever vaccination in the form of a certificate.

Yellow fever is a viral infection transmitted by infected mosquitoes, primarily Aedes and Haemagogus species. While it is preventable through vaccination, understanding the risks is crucial for travellers to take appropriate precautions.

West and Central African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Angola, are the most affected. Travellers should acquire the yellow fever vaccine at least 10 days before their trip, as it provides long-term protection and is often required for entry.

In South America, risk is mostly in tropical and subtropical regions, particularly in Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Bolivia. Urban and rural areas with forested regions are more prone to outbreaks due to the presence of mosquito vectors. Vaccination is strongly recommended for travellers venturing into these zones, especially those planning to visit rainforest areas, remote towns, or regions where outbreaks have been reported.

By being aware of high-risk locations and taking the necessary preventive measures, travellers can explore these vibrant regions with confidence. A visit to a travel health clinic is recommended well before travel to ensure proper vaccination and up-to-date advice for your destination.

Travel Precautions

When traveling to high-risk Yellow Fever areas, it is crucial to wear insect repellent. Ideally, the repellent should contain the chemical ingredient DEET. In high-risk areas, repellents with at least 50% DEET are recommended for effective protection.

Signs & Symptoms

The initial symptoms of Yellow Fever typically appear 3 to 6 days after infection and include fever, headaches, muscle aches, nausea, and vomiting. These symptoms usually last 3 to 4 days, with most people making a full recovery. However, about 15% of individuals progress to a more severe stage of the disease, which may include jaundice and kidney dysfunction. Up to 50% of those who develop these severe symptoms may die.

The Vaccination

The Yellow Fever vaccine takes about 10 days to provide full protection, and the Yellow Fever certificate becomes valid 10 days after the vaccination is completed. It is essential to allow enough time before travel to receive the vaccine. Many countries with a risk of Yellow Fever, as well as surrounding nations, will require proof of vaccination before granting entry. Failure to present a valid Yellow Fever certificate may result in quarantine, being vaccinated upon arrival, or being denied entry.
