Countries At Risk

Due to the way in which the disease is spread, typhoid is mainly found in countries where sanitation levels are poor and there is a limited supply to clean water. The disease is widespread in much of the world including Africa, Southeast Asia, Central Asia and Central America & South America.

Typhoid fever is a severe bacterial infection caused by Salmonella Typhi, which is primarily transmitted by contaminated food and drink. Typhoid remains a serious threat in many regions of the world, and understanding which destinations pose a higher risk is critical for tourists looking to keep healthy while travelling.

Countries with limited access to clean water and proper sewage systems are often the hardest hit. South Asia has the highest prevalence, with India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal commonly reporting instances. Travellers visiting these destinations should consider getting vaccinated as well as practice strict food and water precautions.

Beyond South Asia, moderate typhoid risk exists in parts of Southeast Asia like Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam. Sub-Saharan Africa, especially overcrowded urban areas with poor sanitation, and rural regions of Central and South America such as Mexico, Guatemala, and parts of Peru, also experience outbreaks.

Fortunately, typhoid is preventable. Vaccination, along with proper hygiene and food safety practices such as drinking bottled water, avoiding ice in drinks, and eating well cooked food, dramatically minimises the risk. Travellers should visit a travel health clinic well in advance of their trip to ensure they are adequately protected from typhoid and other preventable infections.

Being aware of the risk levels in your destination is the first step towards having a safe and healthy trip abroad. Book an appointment with Travel Clinic Bromley to discuss your vaccination requirements.

Travel Precautions

Drink only from a sealed water bottle or water that has been boiled. Avoid ice and salads washed with tap water. Eat only fruit that can be peeled, and steer clear of uncooked foods. Make sure all food is freshly cooked and served piping hot.

Signs & Symptoms

The most common symptoms of typhoid include a high fever, stomach pain, headache, and either constipation or diarrhea. If left untreated, these symptoms can worsen, increasing the risk of the disease becoming fatal.

The Vaccination

Travelers heading to high-risk countries are advised to get a typhoid vaccination. The vaccine can be administered either orally (as a course of 3 capsules) or via injection. The oral vaccine is about 80% as effective as the injection and is recommended for those who cannot receive the injection. The typhoid injection remains effective for up to 3 years.
