Embarking on the sacred journey of Hajj or Umrah is a deeply spiritual milestone in a Muslim’s life. To ensure a safe and smooth experience, it’s vital to prepare in advance—especially when it comes to your health, vaccinations, and travel essentials. This guide is tailored for UK pilgrims and includes everything you need to know, from vaccine requirements to tips on managing heat and staying healthy.

Mandatory Vaccination Requirements for Hajj and Umrah

Which Vaccines Are Required?

Currently, all pilgrims from the UK must receive the Meningococcal Meningitis (MenACWY) vaccine before travelling to Saudi Arabia for Hajj or Umrah. This vaccine must be administered at least 10 days before your arrival and should be accompanied by an official vaccination certificate.

We recommend checking with Bromley Travel Clinic or an official source 8 weeks prior to departure in case of updates to vaccination requirements.

Approved Meningitis Vaccines for Pilgrims

The required vaccine is the MenACWY conjugate vaccine, which protects against four strains of the meningococcal bacteria: A, C, W, and Y.

In the UK, the two approved conjugate vaccines are:

  • Nimenrix®
  • MenQuadfi®

At Bromley Travel Clinic, we administer only approved conjugate MenACWY vaccines, and we will provide you with the required certificate, including vaccine batch number and administration date.

Conjugate vaccine certificates are valid for 5 years.
Polysaccharide vaccine certificates are only valid for 3 years

What Is Meningitis and Why Is the Vaccine Important?

Meningitis is a serious infection that causes inflammation of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord. It can spread quickly in crowded environments—like during Hajj and Umrah—making vaccination a crucial preventative measure.

There have been multiple outbreaks linked to the pilgrimage in past decades. Recently, on 11 April 2025, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported 17 cases of invasive meningococcal disease linked to Umrah, with 11 unvaccinated cases in Saudi Arabia alone. This underlines the importance of timely vaccination for all age groups.

COVID-19 Vaccination Requirements

While not mandatory for all, COVID-19 vaccination is required for high-risk individuals, including:

  • Adults aged 65+
  • Pregnant women
  • People with chronic health conditions (heart, respiratory, kidney, blood disorders, immunodeficiency, cancer)

Accepted proof of COVID-19 immunity includes:

  1. One dose of the updated COVID-19 vaccine for the 2024–2025 season
  2. Completion of the primary series (from 2021–2023)
  3. Lab-confirmed recovery from COVID-19 in 2024

Recommended (But Optional) Vaccines

Due to the crowded nature of the pilgrimage, it’s highly recommended to ensure you’re protected against other infectious diseases:

Check Your Routine Immunisations:

Ensure you’re up to date with the following:

  • Diphtheria
  • Tetanus
  • Whooping cough (pertussis)
  • Polio
  • Measles
  • Mumps
  • Chickenpox

Tip: These are part of the NHS childhood vaccination schedule. Review your medical records to confirm you’ve had all doses. If you’ve never had chickenpox, consider getting vaccinated before you travel.

Seasonal Flu and COVID-19 Booster:

Even if you’re not considered high-risk, we strongly recommend receiving the flu vaccine and a COVID-19 booster, as these viruses spread quickly in densely packed environments.

We offer all recommended vaccines at Bromley Travel Clinic.

Staying Safe in the Saudi Arabian Heat

Temperatures in Saudi Arabia can be extreme, especially during summer. Pilgrims—particularly older adults or those with medical conditions—should take extra care to avoid heatstroke and dehydration.

Top Tips for Managing Heat:

Hydration:

  • Drink at least 1 litre of water per hour
  • Carry a refillable bottle at all times

Sun Protection:

  • Wear wide-brimmed hats or carry umbrellas
  • Use SPF 15+ sunscreen
  • Dress in light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing

Rest and Cool Down:

  • Take breaks between rituals
  • Use shaded or indoor areas whenever possible

Handy Cooling Tools:

  • Portable fans or misting sprays
  • Cooling towels or neck wraps
  • Wet wipes and small spray bottles

Watch for Signs of Heat Exhaustion:

Dizziness, headache, nausea, rapid pulse, or confusion can be signs of heatstroke. Seek medical help immediately if symptoms occur.
